Greendale Middle School

In this age of constant information sharing, the 7th graders at Greendale Middle School set an epic goal for themselves: to go truly wireless, pulling the plugs on their favorite electronics.

The challenge started when teacher John Marzion wanted his students to understand how much time they spent utilizing entertainment media. He had the kids track the number of hours they spent each day watching TV, playing video games and surfing the Web. The results were amazing: the average student spent 23-25 hours a week plugged in! He suggested a "tune out" - no television, video games or internet for 90 days - to raise funds for a local charity, and the students chose the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Wisconsin as the beneficiary.

Alyssa Docter, one of the students who made it the full 90 days, said her experience was incredible. She was really impressed with her family's support. "Even my little brother gave money to support this cause," Docter said.

"The kids learned a lot about sacrifice and that when you think about others and set your mind to a goal, you can do anything," said Marzion. "Adults often underestimate what a child can do."

The 7th graders at Greendale Middle School not only reached their goals, they raised over $4,200 to help make Chevy's Walt Disney World® Resort wish come true this summer.
